Engraving a firearm isn’t like engraving a flask. The stakes are different. ATF regulations govern exactly how compliance markings must be applied — minimum depth, minimum size, specific information requirements. Getting it wrong doesn’t just look bad. It creates a legal problem.

ATF Form 1 Engraving — Our Specialty

If you’ve built an NFA item on a Form 1 — a suppressor, short-barreled rifle, short-barreled shotgun, or any other regulated item — federal law requires that you engrave specific identifying information into the receiver or frame before the item can be legally possessed. This is one of the most searched and most misunderstood services in the firearm engraving space. We’ve built this service to be the clearest, most reliable option for Form 1 builders in the region.

What the ATF Requires

Federal regulations under 27 CFR 478.92 require the following information to be engraved, cast, stamped, or otherwise conspicuously placed on the firearm:

— Your name (the trust name, LLC name, or individual name listed as the maker on your approved Form 1) — Your city and state — The caliber or gauge — The model (if applicable) — A serial number of your choosing

Engraving must be to a minimum depth of 0.003 inches and a minimum print size of 1/16 inch. These are federal minimums. We engrave to meet or exceed them.

What You Need to Bring Us

Your approved Form 1 — the ATF approval document with your tax stamp. The item to be engraved. The exact text you want engraved: name, city, state, caliber, model, and serial number, exactly as it should appear. We do not advise on what information to use. We engrave what you provide, and we verify it matches your approved Form 1 before the job runs.

Why This Requires the Right Equipment

Form 1 engraving needs to hit a minimum depth of 0.003 inches into hard steel. Consumer-grade laser engravers don’t reliably achieve this. Our 60W MOPA fiber laser has the power, pulse control, and focus precision to engrave to compliant depth on hardened steel surfaces — including suppressors, AR lowers, and pistol frames — without damaging surrounding finish or geometry.

ATF Serial Number Engraving

For privately made firearms (PMFs) that require serialization under federal and state law, we provide ATF-compliant serial number engraving. Same depth and size requirements as Form 1 work. Bring your firearm and your chosen serial number. We’ll apply it cleanly and correctly.

Pistol Slide Engraving

Custom engraving on pistol slides — text, logos, graphics, American flags, unit insignia, and decorative patterns. MOPA fiber laser work on steel and aluminum produces sharp, high-contrast results without affecting slide function, tolerances, or finish integrity.

The Equipment Behind the Work

Most laser engraving shops use diode lasers — affordable, versatile, and adequate for wood, leather, and coated metals. They are not adequate for serious firearm engraving. Achieving compliant depth on hardened steel requires a fiber laser with sufficient wattage and pulse control.

Our xTool F2 Ultra runs a 60W MOPA fiber laser — one of the most capable machines in this class available to a small production shop. MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) technology gives us independent control over pulse width, frequency, and power, which means we can dial in the exact parameters needed for each material and application. Deep compliance engraving on a suppressor tube. Fine decorative work on an anodized pistol frame. Both jobs, one machine, correct results.

We engrave what the law requires, and we engrave it correctly. We do not provide legal advice, and we do not advise clients on what information to include on their Form 1 submissions. It is your responsibility to ensure your Form 1 has been approved and that the information you provide for engraving matches your approved paperwork exactly.
