Leather Engraving. Tactile, Permanent, and Built to Age Well.
Custom laser engraving on wallets, belts, notebook covers, patch hats, and keychains. Precise burns with clean edges and fine detail that develop character as the leather ages. No dye bleed. No tooling distortion. Just a mark that belongs there.
Why Leather Engraving Works
Leather is one of the most satisfying materials to engrave. The laser burns the surface cleanly, leaving a mark that contrasts naturally against the hide without bleeding or feathering at the edges. As the leather ages and develops patina, the engraving deepens in character rather than fading. A well-engraved leather piece looks better at five years than it did on day one.
At Aion Custom Works, we engrave leather with a 40W diode laser calibrated for hide thickness and surface type. Full-grain, top-grain, and vegetable-tanned leathers all engrave with excellent results. Finished and coated leathers require more careful setting management but are workable in most cases.
The applications are wide. A personalized wallet for a groomsman gift. A custom leather patch for a hat brand. A monogrammed notebook cover for a corporate gift set. A belt with initials and a date burned into the back. A keychain with a logo and a name. Leather engraving sits at the intersection of premium craft and personal meaning, and that’s a valuable place to be in the custom goods market.

What Engraves Well on Leather
Leather is a forgiving medium for most design types, but the material has characteristics that affect how certain artwork translates. Here is what performs well and what requires some preparation.
Text and Lettering Leather handles text exceptionally well across a wide range of font styles. Bold serif fonts, clean sans-serifs, script, and block lettering all engrave with strong contrast and clean edges. Very fine script at small sizes can lose definition on heavily textured hide, so we size appropriately for the material.
Logos and Brand Marks Clean vector logos with solid fills engrave cleanly and hold detail well. Logos with very thin line weights may need slight adjustments for small-format applications like keychains and card holders. We review artwork before production and flag anything that needs modification.
Monograms and Crests One of the strongest design categories for leather. Interlocked initials, family crests, and ornate monogram badges all engrave with the kind of depth and contrast that makes leather the ideal material for this style of work.
Decorative and Geometric Patterns Borders, geometric fills, hatching, and ornamental elements all engrave cleanly on leather and add visual depth to pieces that might otherwise feel plain. Popular for belt decoration, notebook cover borders, and patch backgrounds.
Leather Types We Work With
Full-Grain Leather The highest quality leather and the best surface for engraving. Natural texture, tight grain, and excellent contrast. The preferred material for wallets, patches, and premium gift items.
Top-Grain Leather Sanded and finished to remove surface imperfections. Slightly more uniform than full-grain. Engraves well with consistent results across a surface.
Vegetable-Tanned Leather Tanned using natural plant-based compounds rather than chemicals. Produces the deepest, most characterful burn of any leather type and develops the best patina over time. Highly recommended for decorative work and heirloom pieces.
Finished and Coated Leathers Leathers with heavy surface coatings or pigment layers require lower power settings to avoid burning through the finish unevenly. Results are workable in most cases but are assessed per job. Bring a sample if you’re not sure about your material.
The Difference Calibration Makes
Leather engraving on the wrong settings produces scorched edges, uneven burn depth, and a char smell that never fully leaves the piece. On the right settings, the burn is clean, the edges are defined, and the mark sits in the leather rather than sitting on top of it.
We calibrate for leather type specifically. Full-grain vegetable-tanned stock gets different settings than a finished cowhide wallet blank. The difference shows in the result. Clean contrast, controlled depth, and no collateral damage to the surrounding leather surface.
For branded patch production and bulk gift orders, consistency across a run matters as much as quality on a single piece. Every piece in a batch goes through the same setup and is reviewed before it ships.
