Engraved cutting boards: woods, designs, and care

July 13, 2026

The engraved cutting board is the reigning champion of personalized gifts. Weddings, housewarmings, anniversaries, and the realtor closing gift that finally isn’t a bottle of wine. Done well it’s a daily-use heirloom. Done badly it’s a scorched plank, and the difference comes down to wood choice, design placement, and settings matched to the species.

The woods

Maple is the standard, and it earned the position: tight pale grain, the highest contrast, the crispest detail. When a customer has no preference, we cut maple.

Walnut runs darker, so the engraving reads tone-on-tone rather than high-contrast. Elegant, but fine text disappears into it faster than people expect, so we size lettering up. Cherry sits in between and darkens with age in a way that flatters an engraving. Bamboo is the budget option and engraves with decent contrast (technically a grass, and harder on knife edges, but it does the job for a favor-tier gift).

Open-grained woods like oak fight detailed designs, since the grain interrupts fine lines. And any board with an unknown factory finish gets tested or declined.

More on species behavior at wood engraving services.

Design placement

If the board is going to be used, put the design on the back or in a corner. A full-face engraving is beautiful for about a month, and then the knife scars arrive. Corner and edge placement keeps the design clean on a working board, and we’ll say so on the proof if a layout is headed for trouble.

Names with an established date remain the classic. The design we get asked about most, though, is the recipe board: a parent’s recipe card, scanned and engraved in the original handwriting. It’s the most sentimental thing we produce and the one that gets photographed and sent back to us the most.

Keep text above 3 to 4 millimeters on wood. Grain eats smaller letterforms.

Food safety

The laser burns the wood. Nothing is added: no ink, no coating, no filler, so the engraved area is as food-safe as the board around it. Finish with food-grade mineral oil or board butter, and expect the engraving to drink a little more oil on the first coat.

Care

Hand wash, dry upright, and never the dishwasher, which kills wooden boards engraved or not. Re-oil monthly, engraving included. A scarred working face can be sanded back to life; keep the sandpaper away from the design side.

Ordering

Supply your own board or have us source one (maple and walnut are stocked). Send text, a logo, a recipe scan, or a sketch, and we’ll proof the layout at size before anything burns. Request a quote. Reston, VA based, and boards ship well, so distance is no obstacle.

Frequently asked questions

Can you engrave a photo on a board?

High-contrast photos can work on maple, but line art and text look better on wood in nearly every case. We’ll tell you honestly which category your image is in.

Can you engrave a board we already own?

If it’s raw or oil-finished, yes. Varnished or mystery-coated boards get evaluated first.

How deep is the engraving?

Deep enough to survive decades of washing and oiling. It’s charred into the wood fibers, not printed on the surface.
