Can you laser engrave leather? What works and what doesn’t

July 13, 2026

Yes, you can laser engrave leather, and it’s one of the best-looking things a laser does. The beam burns the top of the grain into a crisp, darkened mark with a slightly recessed feel, like traditional branding but with detail fine enough for a full logo or a signature. The catch is the word “leather,” which on a modern product label can mean anything from a century-old tannery’s veg-tan to plastic with a grain texture stamped into it.

Which one you have decides everything.

Hides that engrave well

Vegetable-tanned leather is the ideal canvas. It burns to a rich, high-contrast dark brown with clean edges, and it’s what the quality end of the wallet-and-belt world is made from anyway. Full-grain and top-grain hides engrave well too, with results that vary a little by finish; a small test spot on an inside edge tells us everything we need.

Chrome-tanned leather marks with lower contrast that depends on the dye lot. Suede and nubuck can be marked, but the nap softens detail, so bold designs only.

The synthetics problem

Bonded leather and PU “vegan leather” are where we slow down, because some synthetics contain PVC, and PVC under a laser releases chlorine gas. That’s a hard no for the operator’s lungs and the machine’s electronics. If the label doesn’t say what the material is, we test a sliver or we decline, and honestly, if you’re buying a gift worth engraving, buy real leather in the first place.

What the mark is like

Darker than the surrounding hide, slightly recessed under a thumb, and permanent, because it’s the structure of the leather rather than a surface treatment. Signatures, small logos, and serif text all hold up on veg-tan.

Leather is a living material, so the surrounding hide darkens with oil, sun, and handling over the years. The mark stays legible while the contrast mellows, which on a daily-carry wallet looks earned rather than worn out.

Common leather projects

Wallets and card holders with initials or a signature. Belts marked near the buckle end. Journals and padfolios, mostly as corporate gifts. Engraved veg-tan patches for hats and range bags. Knife sheaths and holsters, which pair naturally with our firearm work.

Ordering

Send the item, or have us source blanks. Vector art gives the sharpest logos, and a clean scan of a handwritten signature engraves surprisingly well. Placement and size get proofed before anything burns. Request a quote or see leather engraving services. Reston, VA based, nationwide shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Does engraving weaken the leather?

No. The mark is shallow relative to the hide’s thickness, so belts and straps keep their strength.

Can you engrave color into leather?

No. Laser marks are tone-on-tone. If you need color, that’s a different process, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can you work around stitching?

Yes. We keep the beam off synthetic threads and mask where needed.
